PEFC Chile

History before PEFC

At the end of the 1990s, the Chilean Forestry Institute (INFOR) founded a forest certification project in collaboration with Fundación Chile, a national entity dedicated to innovation and development.

Funded by the National Development Corporation (CORFO), the project was a response to the growing demand from international markets for socially and environmentally responsible companies and should give sustainability to the country's forestry and wood sector.

The project began in 2000 and was assisted by international consultants with extensive and valuable experience in the development and implementation of forest certification standards. The project’s goal was to develop a National Sustainable Forest Management Standard for Plantations, which would be validated internationally.

In 2003, the project delivered the CERTFOR Standard for Sustainable Forest Management of Plantations, and the Corporación CertforChile was established as the institutional framework for administrating the CERTFOR system. In 2004, the CERTFOR Chain of Custody Standard and the CERTFOR Group Certification were implemented. This set of standards constitutes the main elements of the Chilean Forest Certification System.

What are the benefits of being part of the PEFC alliance?

Being part of PEFC gives us international recognition and validity, thus increasing the value of our national scheme and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and relationships with global stakeholders.

PEFC is a credible platform that strengthens leadership in sustainability. For the certified companies, belonging to the supply chain of PEFC certified forest products provides commercial opportunities in the international market.

PEFC endorsement adds value to the country’s international performance regarding forestry sustainability, encouraging local improvements in terms of environmental and social responsibility.

Thanks to PEFC’s global standing, the relationship with stakeholders such as local communities and indigenous people is seen as more reliable and it empowers the achievement of sustainable goals.
