12th World Architecture Festival
12th World Architecture Festival
Construction event
For the second time, PEFC sponsored the World Architecture Festival Best Use of Certified Timber Prize, rewarding architects and project teams for their use of certified timber as a main construction material for buildings outstanding in sustainability, innovation, quality or aesthetics.
In its 12th year, the World Architecture Festival 2019 took place on the 4-6 December at the RAI Amsterdam. At the heart of the Festival sits a unique awards programme. It is the only architecture awards where architects pitch their work to a panel of expert judges and their peers - all live at the festival in Amsterdam.
Alongside the awards programme sit keynotes and seminars across two stages, architecture city tours, an exhibition of high-end manufacturers, fringe events, parties and more. Under one roof, over three days WAF provides a global stage of extraordinary architecture.
2019 finalists
This year, eleven fantastic buildings made the shortlist, with each of them presenting their entry to an international judging panel on Friday 6 December.
The eleven buildings display the function, emotion and creativity achievable with wood: from capturing the sunlight in the perfect way, to earthquake resistance and the creation of a warm atmosphere.
“The shortlisted buildings once again highlight that certified timber is more than just another construction material. With its very particular features, it gives something special to every building,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International.
The winner
We were delighted to announce that Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre (PRACC) by iredale pedersen hook architects and Advanced Timber Concepts won the prize.
“We are delighted to receive this prize, which recognises the use of sustainable timber as a key material for a building which lies at the heart of the local Pingelly community,” said Patrick Beale from Advanced Timber Concepts.
