Sustainability in Packaging Asia 2021
Packaging event
Despite the abundant availability of forest resources, without applying sustainable forest management everywhere and practicing responsible sourcing, we won’t be able to fulfil the global demand on our forests.
Our CEO Ben Gunneberg addressed the importance of sustainable forest management on day 1 of Sustainability in Packaging Asia 2021, a virtual event that tool place 7 – 9 June 2021.
Ben spoke at the ‘Regulatory Landscape and Initiatives for Circular Packaging’ session about the impact of wood-based fibre packaging and the ‘DO-NO-HARM’ approach.
In a panel discussion later that day, Ben and other panellists debated how the regulatory landscape is evolving across the world, what the gaps and challenges are, and how it can be more harmonized.
Wood-based fibre packaging – the natural choice
Paper and packaging stakeholders recognise that they have a responsibility to improve their environmental credentials. The impact of packaging material should be considered in the designing stage where a DO-NO-HARM approach can be adopted.
By choosing only safe and circular materials, producers can ensure that products are safer to both humans and the environment, and the materials used to make them can be reused without causing contamination or waste management problems.
While wood-based fibre packaging can provide an important solution, it is vital that it is sourced from sustainably managed forests.
Sustainable management of forests – essential for the packaging industry
To ensure continued availability for the production of paper and packaging, it is essential, in addition to recycling, to manage forests sustainably. PEFC sustainable forest management certification enables forest owners to provide assurances that they manage their forests in line with challenging environmental, social, and economic requirements – balancing people, planet, and profit.
Consumers can easily identify such products through the PEFC label, which is exclusively available for products coming from certified, healthy forests.
Together we can reach higher!
