2018 PEFC Photographer of the Year – we have a winner!!
12 November 2018 Forests in photos
From International Day of Forests until World Environment Day, we asked photographers to show us what forests mean to them – and received more than 12,000 stunning images from around the world.
After a long deliberation, our jury chose Kyoko Harada with her photo ‘Digging Bamboo Shoots in Spring’ as the winner of the photo contest.
The winner
Taken in the Chiba Prefecture in eastern Japan, the image shows the photographer’s family digging bamboo shoots in a forest.
“My family loves the forest! For us, it is a place to interact with nature and learn about food. We are very grateful for the natural blessings the forest brings us,” says Kyoko.
“Digging bamboo shoots is a Japanese tradition. It is not easy, but it is a lot of fun. We try to find the ones with a small tip visible on the ground and dig them out with a shovel,” she explains.
The winning photo highlights the various benefits of forests: besides providing food and recreation, they can also help us learn about nature.
Kyoko receives 3000 CHF for her winning image, and her photo, along with the 11 other top images, is on display this week during our PEFC Forest Certification Week in Geneva, Switzerland.
