There’s just one week left to wait until we discover the winning project of the World Architecture Festival Best Use of Certified Timber Prize 2019.
Supported by PEFC, this Prize awards project teams that have used certified timber in an innovative, educational or artistic manner.
This year, eleven fantastic buildings made the shortlist. Each of them will present their entry to an international judging panel, between 10:00 and 15:00 on Friday 6 December.
Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International and a jury member will then present the winner with the prize at the closing Gala Dinner that evening, at the historic Beurs van Berlage venue.
The finalists
The eleven buildings display the function, emotion and creativity achievable with wood: from capturing the sunlight in the perfect way, to earthquake resistance and the creation of a warm atmosphere.
“The shortlisted buildings highlight that certified timber is more than just another construction material. With its very particular features, it gives something special to every building,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International.
Jury member Mark Thomson
One of the judges charged with making the important decision is Australian architect Mark Thomson, an expert in sustainable construction and board member of Responsible Wood, our national member in Australia.
Mark has developed a reputation as an expert in sustainable construction. Building his own timber home not only netted him three architectural awards, but also convinced him of the multiple benefits wood products offer.
In addition to his work as an architect and a board member of Responsible Wood, Mark has consulted for major environmental organizations, managed hundreds of projects and lectured at more than 10 universities.

“The interest and growth potential for solid engineered timber such as CLT is really exciting,” said Elisabeth Piveteau-Boley, Export Sales Manager for the UK and Ireland. “The ways that architects and those designing the built environment are using products such as CLT across Europe and worldwide is incredible.”
PIVETEAUBOIS has extended its reach into the engineered timber sector with the development of a new CLT product, HEXAPLI, which is the main construction material of the PEFC stand at the WAF.
