The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) have released an updated Buyers' Guide to Canada's Sustainable Forest Products so that customers can be well-informed and confident that their purchasing decisions are environmentally and socially responsible.

FPAC Buyers Guide

The guide provides practical advice to help ensure buying decisions go beyond the traditional concerns of price, quality, and availability to also consider environmental and social impacts such as climate change, legality and certification – highlighting PEFC and its North American members SFI and CSA among credible certification programs. It will help inform the growing number of companies who wish to adopt green procurement policies as part of their efforts to achieve their own sustainability goals.

"There is no country better than Canada when it comes to meeting the growing global demand for sustainable forest products and we welcome scrutiny of our exceptional environmental performance," says the President and CEO of FPAC, David Lindsay. "This fact-based guide will help discerning buyers feel confident of their choice in forest products sourced from Canada."

The Buyers' Guide was officially launched at the 28th Annual PwC Global Forest and Paper Industry Conference in Vancouver, British Colombia, on 6 May 2015.

"The Buyers' Guide addresses the key global challenges that the World Business Council for Sustainable Development identified in their Guide to Sustainable Procurement of Wood and Paper-based Products," said Bruce McIntyre, senior partner in PwC's Forest, Paper & Packaging practice. "We were pleased to assist FPAC in presenting these issues in a Canadian context."

The stellar environmental performance of the Canadian forest products industry includes a 70% decline in greenhouse gas emissions since 1990, a negligible 0.02% rate of deforestation and a world-leading 161 million hectares of independently certified forests, four times more than any other country. Under FPAC's Vision2020, the sector continues to strive for improvement with the goal of a further reduction in its environmental footprint by 35% by the end of the decade.
