How do you feel about forests?

I am a great fan of nature and I like to visit forests on hills and mountains. They give me freedom, a place where I can truly rest and enjoy the moment. By doing so, I overcome the stress of everyday life.

In the forest, I become part of nature. There is this mysterious power, and the energy that I get there empowers me long afterwards. These feelings are hard to describe, so I never forget to catch them on camera. When the feelings fade away, the photo will recall the memories and I once again recover some of that energy.

How did the forest inspire you to take your winning photo?

I took this photograph on an early morning mountain trip, just as nature awakened. After a very stressful week, I was drawn into nature, as if I knew I would witness a beautiful scene. The mere look of the mist and autumn colours took my breath away.

In autumn, the forest wakes up in a veil of mystery, revealing the essence of everything. When I took this photo, I felt the complete freedom, happiness and joy of living.

What you think of the work that PEFC does to care for forests?

I am aware that forests are also a source of raw materials. The energy that trees carry within them does not get lost in processing but only changes. For this reason, wooden products are pleasant and feel alive and cosy.

Without caring for the forests, they could be destroyed, and I applaud all organizations that care and help to ensure that this does not happen.

About the contest

In 2017 we held the first ‘Experience Forests, Experience PEFC’ photo contest. Taking place in 23 countries, we received over 11,000 photos from forests around the world. From the thousands of photos received, we chose our top 12 images. For every month of 2018, we will be showcasing one of these photos.
