5 July 2024 EU Deforestation Regulation
Last week, we hosted a webinar informing about the latest developments at PEFC as we progress on our roadmap to EUDR alignment.
The webinar focused on the advances we have made in aligning our sustainable forest management and chain of custody standards with EUDR requirements and looked at the vital data and integrity elements.
Our PEFC experts Marta Martínez Pardo (Chain of Custody), Rob Shaw (Data and Integrity), Hubert Inhaizer (Sustainable Forest Management), and Maja Drca (EU Affairs) discussed PEFC's agile approach to aligning with EUDR guidelines by the end of the year.
Chain of Custody
Marta introduced the PEFC EUDR Due Diligence System (DDS), which is currently undergoing approval by the PEFC General Assembly and is expected to be finalised by late July. This tool aims to simplify EUDR compliance for supply chain entities, integrating seamlessly with existing PEFC standards.
Data and integrity
Rob discussed PEFC's strategy on data management. He announced the first technical partnership with LiveEO, and introduced Piero Marlia from LiveEO, who presented Trade Aware, a tool offering an end-to-end compliance solution integrating EUDR and PEFC standards, catering to timber and tree-based products supply chain complexities.
Sustainable Forest Management
Hubert addressed the modification proposals to PEFC's Sustainable Forest Management standard, developed for harmonisation with EU frameworks like the EUDR. The proposed amedments will enhance the common application of definitions and address deforestation concerns. The public consultation is open until 13 July. Watch the webinar explaining the proposed changes and give your feedback.
EU updates
Maja explained the European Commission's progress on the development of the implementation tools for the EUDR, such as the functional EU–Observatory and FAQs, but also the guidance document and the IT system, both expected as soon as possible. She highlighted the supportive role of forest certification, like the PEFC, in the EUDR's comprehensive due diligence.
During the Q&A, the speakers answered questions about the transfer of information, material classification and declaration, and updates from the EU Commission documentation.
