Sustainability, solidarity and gender equality on the catwalk

Fantastic and sustainable creations by renowned Spanish designer, María Lafuente, marked the close of Madrid Fashion Week 2018. And what’s even better, the starting place for much of the clothing was the forest!

This is the second time that PEFC Spain has collaborated with María Lafuente, promoting sustainable materials and supporting gender equality. Several of the garments on show were made from cellulose fibers (such as lyocell, modal and viscose) from sustainably managed, PEFC-certified forests.

María Lafuente presented this new collection, SORORIDAD, in the emblematic La N@ve of the old Boetticher factory in Madrid. A collection inspired by gender equality, solidarity and sustainability, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

With this collection, María Lafuente and PEFC offer consumers a fashion that respects the environment, helps ensure social conditions as well as dignified and equal work, and lowers water consumption and CO2 emissions.

What’s more, through PEFC certification, we know the materials used to make the clothes come from sustainably managed forests that will be enjoyed by future generations.

The show

The models, including Madelaine Hjört and the presenter, model and actress, Inma del Moral, showcased the new collection by the Spanish designer.

The garments were all made by the workshop Lal La Buya, located in Melilla (a Spanish autonomous city located on the north coast of Africa) which works with women at risk of social exclusion. The manufacturing process also incorporated handmade embroidery made by the Association of Friends of the Costume of Lagartera of Toledo (Central Spain).

The shoes were produced by Herce Valverde, from Valverde del Camino (Southern Spain) and the designer has also counted on the collaboration of Nina Mur with her glasses made of wood from reforested Finnish forests.

This fashion show is part of our Forests for Fashion initiative, run in partnership with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and other UN agencies.

Together, we are linking forest-based materials from sustainably managed forests with the world of fashion. Bringing these fantastic, innovative and sustainable materials to a wider audience.
