This July, our image in the spotlight is ‘Carmen and Giacomo’ by Alfonsina Pereira in Uruguay. The photo was a finalist in our 2023 Best of the Best Photo Contest.
In our interview, Alfonsina shared how the forest inspires her, and how they have changed over the years, since she first took part in the PEFC Photo Contest.
Her photo was the winner of PEFC Uruguay’s 2019 national contest, and a runner-up in the International contest in the same year.
How does the forest continue to inspire you and your photography?
The forest is a constant inspiration for me. We live so immersed in the daily life of the city that the forest and everything it represents is a necessary breath to connect with our essence.
Have the forests you photograph in changed since you took your photo Carmen and Giacomo?
In recent years, I have noticed that they have changed, that several natural disasters have occurred and that human interests also have a great impact on the forests. Fortunately, many responsible people and institutions have emerged to protect these areas.
How has your photography journey continued since you first participated in the PEFC Photo Contest?
My photographic process continues to focus on nature and human interaction with it. I am passionate about travelling, seeing places, and portraying the relationship between people and nature through photography.
What can each of us do to safeguard our forests?
I believe that the big changes start from the daily actions of each of us. From the micro to the macro. In order to safeguard our forests in the first place, it is important that we become environmentally aware of the importance they have for our existence, and once we generate that change in awareness, take responsibility for changing our relationship with forests in a more responsible way. For example, consuming certified products or recycling our waste.
Have you discovered anything about PEFC and/or certification over these past years that you didn’t know before?
In recent years I have discovered several new PEFC-certified products in stores and supermarkets.
