The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) asked for the best forest photos, and nearly 1000 photographers and forest lovers followed the call.
“We hope that through this platform and the lenses of nature enthusiasts, the photos will enable both the photographers and the general public to see the forests in a different way and to better appreciate their many roles and functions,” said Mr. Yong Teng Koon, CEO of MTCC, our national member for Malaysia.
The winning images
The winner of MTCC’s contest is Mohd Samsi Sumairi with the photo ‘Germination’, taken in the Kanching Forest Reserve, in Selangor, Malaysia.
The image shows a budding seedling in the middle of a dense forest, symbolizing the continued growth and renewal in forests.
“My photograph of the budding seedling symbolises two things: the ability of forests to regenerate, as well as sustainability and hope for the coming generations,” said the winning photographer.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to explore and express my love for forests through this contest. I hope that more people will learn to care for and relish our wonderful nature in Malaysia.”
First prize in the category ‘Forest and People’ went to Redzuan bin Bohari for the image ‘My Forest My World’. Taken in Kuala Sepetang in Perak, Western Malaysia, the photo showcases hard work in the forest.
“Mat, a 25-year-old local man, runs the boat by himself. Only with his hands, Mat unloads each trunk weighing 30 to 40 kilograms,” the photographer explains.
“Not all young people are interested in doing this job, but for Mat the forest is where he earns a living for himself and his family.”
