How PEFC Chain of Custody can help Vietnamese companies meet EU Timber Regulations and prepare for the growing supply of PEFC-certified material expected to flow into the country was the focus of today’s Forestry Certification Workshop in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam.
Organized by HAWA (Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City), Bureau Veritas and PEFC International, the workshop attracted over 50 company representatives, including processors and exporters, to find out what PEFC can do for their business.
Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC international, emphasized the importance of Viet Nam in promoting certification worldwide, stating "Viet Nam imports 80% of wood-based raw material which it manufactures into products exported to over 100 countries around the world - that's 18 million cubic meters of wood with an export value of over 5.6 billion USD, making Viet Nam a key global player in promoting sustainability."
Dr. Ha of the Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry reported on the latest developments in market trends and certification in Viet Nam. In the afternoon, Johan Vlieger, Technical Officer at PEFC International, took companies through a training seminar to prepare them for PEFC Chain of Custody certification.
This workshop was the second of two PEFC workshops taking place in Viet Nam this December. The first, which welcomed government officials, forestry experts and certification bodies from around the country, saw the launch of the Vietnamese version of the System Development Toolkit.
